Description

My guest this week is Michael Layne Heath (critic, author & compiler of My Week Beats Your Year: Encounters With Lou Reed), who brings us the Lou Reed & John Cale performance film Songs For Drella to discuss.

We also talk about Michael starting the first D.C. Punk zine in 1977, reading about bands before hearing them, The Slickee Boys, Tommy Keene & Razz, Vintage Violence zine, The Cramps playing D.C., Creem Magazine, Cale recording his album Fear, the import bins at local record stores, treating press interviews as art pieces, Lou Reed's control of a crowd, the genesis of Songs For Drella, how by the end of the project they didn’t want to work together, the differences between the film versions of the songs and the album versions, the dream sequence in the film, fictionalizing Warhol’s life in this work, the very telling non-verbal interactions between Cale and Reed in this film, how the film was misplaced for years after its initial VHS release and then found during the making of the Todd Haynes VU doc, where Lou and John were at the time of this project, Lou’s defense for doing Honda/American Express commercials, Robert Quine, Warhol’s work ethic, The Warhol Museum, and we also reenact the classic and combative Lou Reed interview with the Australian press core!
