Q&A
Why did APAC choose to target some members of the "Squad" but not others in the recent primaries?
APAC focused on races where they believed they could win, targeting representatives like Cory Bush and Jamal Bowman who were vocal critics of Israel and the war in Gaza. They also considered factors like redistricting and the candidates' fundraising and constituent service records.
What are the implications of APAC's spending on the future of progressive lawmakers who criticize Israel's actions in Gaza?
The massive spending by APAC highlights the potential financial cost for progressive lawmakers who speak out against Israel's policies. It may lead to a shift in the calculus for these lawmakers, making them more cautious about expressing their views on the conflict.
What are some potential countermeasures that progressives can employ to combat the influence of super PACs in their primary elections?
Some proposed countermeasures include creating a counter-super PAC to oppose the spending of groups like APAC, focusing on strong grassroots organizing and door-to-door campaigning, and emphasizing the importance of voter engagement and mobilization.
Show Notes
Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar easily won her primary race on Tuesday in a rematch against an opponent she beat by just a few thousand votes two years ago. While she and other members of The Squad easily held onto their seats in Congress, two of their fellow progressives were ousted amid record spending by pro-Israel groups: Reps —Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri. The American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, spent $23 million on the two races alone, helping make them the most expensive House primaries in history. Sophie Hurwitz, reporter at Mother Jones, explains why AIPAC targeted some Squad members, not others.
And in headlines: New federal data showed inflation dropped below 3 percent for the first time since March 2021, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency in response to an outbreak of mpox in 13 African countries, and archival data from NASA’s Insight Lander shows evidence of water on Mars.
