The story is based on the true experiences of Hunter's great-grandparents and their five children. Hunter was inspired to write the book after interviewing her grandmother and
learning about her grandfather's experiences during the Holocaust. The series stars Joey King, Logan Lerman, and Hadas Yaron. It was written and executive-produced by Erica Lipez and directed and executive-produced by Thomas Kail.

*The first three episodes of the Hulu miniseries We Were the Lucky Ones premieres on Thursday, March 28, 2024. A new episode will be released every week thereafter.
