When I see the number 42 (this podcast episode number) the first thing (person, in this case) I think of is Jackie Robinson. I’m inspired by the enormous impact he had on this country and others. He certainly influenced baseball but he also impacted other sports, civil rights, he was in the Army in WWII, he changed communities and of course he impacted the lives of many individual people, whether they met him or not.

Jackie had his own opinions about impact:

A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.

His impact was on a large, global scale, but it doesn’t have to be that way for everyone. Here are four ways you can have a positive impact on the lives of people around you:

1. Be An Honorable Example

People of all ages are watching you, how do you want them to remember you? Would you want them to copy you?

As Elwood Chapman said:

Attitudes Are Caught, Not Taught

2. Be Humble

You’re likely talented and have ambitions. These are good things, but you’ll have even more impact if you stay humble. Confidence is good, but no one likes arrogance or boastfulness. Humility is the ultimate display of confidence.

3. Care About Others

Jackie Robinson also said:

I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me… all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.

You can care for people in all areas of your life, all the way from your family to people on street. Everyone is human.

4. Coach

Guide, teach and encourage to help others become the best they are meant to be. It goes back to caring enough to investigate the individual.
