Just having skills or competence is no longer enough in the service business. There is more competition than ever and it isn’t difficult to find someone who does a good job. Technology has leveled the playing field and has given rise to competitive services, networks and a robust DIY community.

In order to raise yourself above the crowd I think it is important to focus on three areas: relationships, creativity and leadership.

1. Relationships

Relationships based on trust, generosity and caring win every time. Solid relationships will help you collaborate with your internal teams and bring better ideas to clients. The best salespeople have always developed relationships by giving generously and over a long period of time.

2. Creativity

Collaboration with a team requires endless creativity to bring together divergent people and ideas. Plus, your clients’ problems are always changing and they need more creative solutions. The competitive environment also rewards marketers and salespeople who uncover creative ways to get noticed.

3. Leadership

Service organizations are full of people and these people require great leaders. It is getting more difficult to keep great people and your clients and prospects expect you to lead them to better solutions and ideas. Since everybody can be a media company today, why wouldn’t you use the opportunity to demonstrate your thought leadership?
