God's people got tired of waiting for Moses to come down the mountain and trusting God, who delivered them out of bondage and slavery. Forgetting what God had told them directly and did for them, the Israelites wanted to make their own god. They formed a crowd around Aaron to make them a god to worship. Aaron reluctantly agreed to make a golden calf from their gold jewelry, melt it down, and mold it into the idol. The people were out of control and worshiped the golden calf as their god and sacrificed to it. God told Moses to go down the mountain and see what his people were up to. When Moses saw what they were doing, sinning against the Lord, he broke the two tablets on which God handwrote the Ten Commandments. Out of anger, Moses' act symbolized the breaking of God's covenant with the Israelites. Moses had to intercede with God to have mercy on them and not wipe them out because God made a promise to Abraham. God did relent and gave mercy on those who agreed to follow Him while taking judgment on those who would not. This story is symbolic of what will happen in the end when God judges those not written in His book of life and rewards those who are. It is a significant and telling chapter in the book Exodus.
