Today’s word is: dignity. The meaning of dignity is : calm and controlled behaviour even in a difficult situation , the state or quality which is worthy of respect by others, a high rank or position, a sense of pride in oneself.

The word dignity represents controlled behaviour even while facing difficulties. It also means self-respect.


For example: In his old age, the actor was without work, but he always behaved with dignity.


Listen carefully how we can use the word dignity in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.


Example number 1 of 8:  The government has created stringent guidelines for the social media websites. They are strongly advised that they must protect the dignity of the users through appropriate measures.                 


Example number 2 of 8: The officer of the human rights commission carried out a survey of prisons across the country. Based on the outcome of the survey, they requested the authorities to carry out reforms in jails  so that the prisoners are treated with dignity.


Example number 3 of 8: The new magazine for entrepreneurs launched its print as well as online version on the eve of Republic day. On this occasion, the editor personally invited dignitaries from different sections of the society.


Example number 4 of 8: The young boy asked the garage owner  for work. The owner offered him some money as help. But, the boy refused the money and insisted on earning his wages. The owner was impressed with his dignity and gave him some work.


Example number 5 of 8:  The veteran soldier found it difficult to climb up the stage to receive the lifetime achievement award. The chief guest himself climbed down, presented the award to him and thus respected the dignity of the receiver.


Example number 6 of 8: Annie’s father was bed ridden and she was unable to pay her school fees. Her class teacher realised her difficulty and paid her fees. However, he did it secretly to protect her dignity.


Example number 7 of 8: Ahmed could not clear the interview at a call centre. One of his friends offered him a job there through a recommendation. But, to retain his dignity, Ahmed decided to prepare meticulously and to give a second attempt.


Example number 8 of 8: A senior government officer lost his life while performing his duty. His funeral was attended by ministers and army generals. At the funeral, the family of the officer conducted itself with dignity and thanked all for their support.
