Today’s word is: revert. The word revert means: to go back to a previous condition, state, practice or topic. It also means to reply or respond to someone.  


In this English vocabulary lesson you will learn how to use the word revert. We are sure that this ESL lesson will help you to enhance your English vocabulary and speak English fluently and confidently.


The word revert is used in a situation when a person or organization or a situation goes back to an earlier condition or method. It is also used when someone responds to a request or a query.


For example, when the parents protested about the change in school timetable, the school decided to revert to the earlier schedule.  


The manager informed the customer that he will revert with more detailed information about the status of dispatches in a week’s time.


Listen carefully how we can use the word revert in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.


Example number 1 of 8:  The railways received complaints about the poor screen visibility of the newly installed train indicators. Hence, after an internal discussion, it decided to revert to the earlier indicators.  


Example number 2 of 8: The education board introduced a new system of evaluation for the final year students. But, the students found it difficult to adjust to the changed pattern. Therefore, after discussing the matter with eminent educationists, the board decided to revert to the original system of evaluation.


Example number 3 of 8:  The land dispute case was pending in the court of law for several months due to lack of certain information. The judge took note of the same and instructed the district collector to revert with the required details at the earliest.


Example number 4 of 8:  Aniket scored less marks in mathematics in the last two tests. His math teacher was concerned about this. He gave few worksheets to Aniket as homework. He also contacted his mother and asked her to revert to him whether Aniket is doing his homework as expected.


Example number 5 of 8:  The museum earlier had a large number of ancient artifacts and paintings. The new director replaced some of these with modern art paintings. However, this resulted in reduction in the number of visitors. This was brought to the notice of the director, but he decided not to revert to the original content of display.


Example number 6 of 8: The personal care products company introduced a new herbal shampoo in the market. It also appointed a market survey team to visit shops and customers to get their feedback. The head of the survey team would then revert back to the Sales Director with a summary of the feedback on a weekly basis.


Example number 7 of 8: Namrata had adopted the western style of breakfast for her children since past few months. She would buy these items from supermarkets. Prior to that, she used to make Indian style breakfast for them. However, recently she learnt the importance of freshly cooked diet and decided to revert to her earlier plan of cooking.


Example number 8 of 8: The popular software company changed its home web page to add novelty to the software. But, most users contacted its call centre to complain that they were finding it difficult to access the software. Hence, the company decided to revert to the original web page.
