27. The Farming of Bones: that's a shibboleth
Description
alrighty, so a shibboleth. [defined in this episode, but in case you’re feeling anxious and don’t wish to search it up]
as defined by Merriam-Webster:
1 a: a word or saying used by adherents of a party, sect, or belief and usually regarded by others as empty of real meaning
b: a widely held belief
2 a: a use of language regarded as distinctive of a particular group
b: a custom or usage regarded as distinguishing one group from others
in the context of The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat, we’re looking at definition two more than one. arguably, it could be said that both are applicable. either way, we were struck by the narrator choice and the laissez-faire attitude that she seemed to hold at the intial discussions of confrontation.
if this is different to how you see it, please, please, share away. we’d love to hear other perspectives.
regardless, we were able to discuss some insights on the current world ,the nature of history and the passage of time.
