Workforce Survey with Tom Wilk

It’s my pleasure to welcome Thomas welcome back to the podcast.

In this episode we covered:

  • What was the genesis of this survey?

  • Why do you think the organizations do the workforce training?

  • Why do you think you’re such an increase in our interest in the certification?

What was the genesis of this survey?

We noticed a gap in since 2015 I believe it was our first work for a survey there is a gap in industry knowledge on what workers attitudes work towards their jobs especially in the maintenance reliability sector. We’ve all heard the stories of endless overtime hours. We thought maybe we would do a survey to quantify the prevailing attitudes towards people’s jobs. There are some interesting things when I went through the data and one of the things that kind of surprised me was that many of the respondents indicated increased concern finding and retaining workers.

Why do you think the organizations do the workforce training?

I think more people reported they had training available to them because our company has formal workforce training development programs in place to help employees. They want their employees to learn more about their field, to be more successful in their current role, develop leadership skills.

Why do you think you’re such an increase in our interest in the certification?

In the past 3 years, there was a shift we saw. There was a little bit less wonder, a little more focus lasted, and people were intentional with what they were doing and how they could exercise their skills on the job training opportunities. I see a lot of individuals looking to move outside of their organization into more certification. The one thing we’ve heard over and over are more job openings and qualified people, there's a lot of the folks you’re in contact with and taking advantage of that as well as using these certifications to step up and look outside worked for them. There is an increase in wages and benefits over the previous years, given that there’s such a strong market demand for people and skills. It helps in keeping employees happy and motivated.

The survey indicated that the staff wanted a clearer definition of qualifications for promotion,, raises, bonuses and so on so forth. Why did this jump up in importance over previous years?

People want to know the benchmarks of their current job to get a hat. They're looking around and evaluating opportunities and trying to figure out how long it will work for them. People aren’t leaving the organization because it’s a credit organization when they’re looking around, they’re trying to stop the ball and trying to figure out what their skills are worth.

What do you want our listeners to take away from the survey?

If you’re looking for certification, training opportunities, you’re not alone. If you’re looking for training, there’s no harm in asking your employer what they will want to support. Recruitment retention continues to be a challenge for everyone not just you. If you’re not already focused on that end of your professional development, the language of contracts language of partnerships, consider looking towards resources that would help you out with that. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Don’t wait for reality to overwhelm you.
