33. Affective Breakdown | Thinkin' Bros Podcast
Description
đ§ Thinkinâ Bros Podcast is hosted by intellectual phenomena Alex and Chris. We make psychology and philosophy accessible through informal discussions and try to find ways to use these disciplines to enhance our everyday lives.
đ We begin by discussing What Is an Emotion? This paper is a discussion between two psychologists, Ralph Adolphs and Lisa Barrett, mediated by Leonard Mlodinow, a theoretical physicist. If this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, in some ways it is. This paper gives an overview of two opposing theories of emotion, on of which is objectively wrong (as assessed by Chris). Nonetheless, it introduces some good questions about what we think emotions are.
đ In the main segment, we discuss the first two chapters of Neil Postman's "The End of Education": The Necessity of Gods and Some Gods That Fail. It introduces a foundational problem in the current education system: a lack of a greater purpose. While people usually focus on the engineering problems of education (where should students sit, what books they should study, etc.), Neil identifies something far deeper that is making our youth apathetic to their schooling: the lack of a god. But not necessarily god with a big "G".
