Q&A

  • What are Buddha houses and what role did they play in Heaven's case?

Buddha houses are traditional healing centers in Ethiopia where people seek protection and healing from evil spirits, diseases, and other ailments. In Heaven's case, her family took her to a Buddha house after she was injured, but it is believed that they did so to erase evidence and create a false narrative about her death.

  • What evidence led to Getnet's arrest and conviction?

The discovery of Heaven's missing shoe in Getnet's house, his suspicious behavior at the hospital, and the testimony of Heaven's aunt, who revealed the details of his crime, provided crucial evidence that led to his arrest and conviction.

  • Why is Heaven's mother facing so much backlash and disbelief from the community?

Some members of the community are blaming Heaven's mother for her daughter's death, claiming that she should have been more vigilant and that she is responsible for bringing a child into a dangerous world. They also seem to be influenced by Getnet's family, who are actively trying to discredit Heaven's mother and protect their relative.

  • What are the broader implications of Heaven's case for Ethiopia?

Heaven's case highlights the prevalence of child sexual abuse and murder in Ethiopia, as well as the shortcomings of the justice system in protecting children and holding perpetrators accountable. It also raises concerns about the lack of support for victims and their families, and the need for stronger child protection laws and a more robust justice system.

Show Notes

7-year-old Heaven was brought into the Budha House to be healed. The neighbors who brought her in tried to explain - she had been playing and hanging onto a bar when she fell and hit her head. She is now unconscious.

But the healers could just take one look at Heaven and know - the little girl is dead.

When Heaven’s mom finally sees Heaven’s little body - she finds something even more puzzling. Her mouth is filled with cement. Her autopsy shows she was assaulted “front and back” and had these weird little cuts all over her body.

On her neck, you could almost make out the 5 fingers that were wrapped around her. Suffocating her.

It feels like all the neighbors are in on some big conspiracy. Why do they keep insisting that she fell when it’s so clear she did not. What are they hiding?

Heaven’s mom is going to figure out what the hell happened to her daughter.
