Description

Stage 12 of Our Giro picks up the Max Sciandri story at the point where he decided to switch nationalities and swap his Italian racing licence for a British one.

Sciandri also recalls riding the 2000 Giro d'Italia for the vegetarian Linda McCartney Foods team and we hear from the team's press officer John Deering about a remarkable stage win for David McKenzie.

Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe remember that 2000 race and Marco Pantani's comeback after being kicked out of the previous year's Giro while just a couple of days from clinching victory.

As we are in Cesenatico, Pantani's home town, we look back 12 months to the day Daniel and Lionel dropped in on the family-owned piadineria and Lionel's attempt to make the traditional Italian flatbread sandwiches is scrutinised by food writer Felicity Cloake. There's also wine of the day and another appropriate song to play us out from François Thomazeau.

The full, unedited Max Sciandri interview will be available for Friends of the Podcast in a couple of days.

The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport.

COMING TOMORROW
We look back a couple of months to life before lockdown, speaking to Max Schachmann, who won Paris-Nice, the last major race before coronavirus brought professional sport, and much of the world, to a standstill.

LIFE IN THE PELOTON
While we've been doing Our Giro, Mitch Docker and his old Orica-GreenEdge teammates have been remembering Their Giro when they won the opening team time trial of the 2014 race in Belfast.
