Summary

Today I will talk about 'Seijin shiki' (coming of age ceremony).

Seijin means adult. What is the age of adulthood in your country?

In Japan, it has always been 20 years old. However, the law was changed last year, and now the age of adulthood is 18.

You can get a credit card. You can rent a room.

In Japan, the Coming of Age Ceremony is held on the second Monday of January. People who have reached adulthood get together and celebrate in their communities.

They can meet friends from elementary and junior high school. Many women wear kimonos, which are very beautiful.

But in most cities and towns, 18- and 19-year-olds did not participate.

Most cities and towns say it is because they are busy with their studies and other activities.

Besides, I think it might be difficult to create a new coming-of-age ceremony suddenly.

Some places have their coming-of-age ceremony in a different month.
