The NRA had a legitimate message but it sounds like it is more of a cult, creating division and likely to cause negative outcomes out of line with its original mission.

g The podcast More Perfect did an incredible episode interviewing the NRA guys who staged the coup you're talking about. They cover the NRAs switch and climb into power. I definitely recommend checking it out.. It blew my mind (The episode is "Radio Lab Presents More Perfect - The Gun Show")

Jan Key You should look into the origins of the NRA's current gun rights focus. They were focused on sports that involved guns until a group of members staged a takerover, hoping to focus on the second amendment. Super fascinating.
