In the late 16th century, a group of English settlers established the first English colony in what is now the United States on Roanoke Island, off the coast of present-day North Carolina. The colony, led by John White, faced many challenges in this new land. In 1587, White left for England to gather more supplies, leaving behind his daughter and granddaughter.
When he returned three years later, he found the settlement completely deserted, with no sign of the 115 settlers he had left behind. The only clues were the word "CROATOAN" carved into a tree and "CRO" etched into a gatepost. It was as if the colony had vanished into thin air.
To this day, the fate of the Roanoke Colony remains a mystery. Historians and archaeologists have speculated that the settlers may have integrated with local Native American tribes, or they may have perished due to hardships or conflicts. Despite extensive research, the true story of their disappearance continues to elude us, leaving the village of Roanoke as one of the most enigmatic and unsettling mysteries in American history.
