Ableism is a system of beliefs and practices that discriminate against people with disabilities, and can be expressed in a variety of ways:
- Attitudes
Ableism can be reflected in negative attitudes, stereotypes, and stigma towards people with disabilities. - Actions
Ableism can be reflected in actions, such as excluding people with disabilities from events and spaces that don't account for their needs. - Words
Ableism can be reflected in words, such as assuming that people with disabilities want or need to be "fixed". - Access
Ableism can be reflected in access issues, such as inaccessible workspaces that exclude people with disabilities from participating in the workforce.
Ableism is similar to racism, sexism, or ageism, and can be conscious or unconscious. It can be embedded in institutions, systems, or the broader culture of a society. - Some synonyms for ableism include able-bodiedism, able-bodism, and ablism.
