‘Captain’ Charles Hewitt. 1884-1966
Born Durham 1884
Millwall Manager 1936-40 and again 1948-56
Known as ‘Mr Millwall’ because of his involvement with all aspects of the club - scouting, management and club secretary.
One of the most flamboyant and controversial figures ever to be involved with the club.
FA Cup semi-finalists 1937
Promotion to Division Two
Resigned 1940 after an FA enquiry into alleged illegal payments
Libel action against Millwall chairman Tom Thorne 1941:
Awarded £100 damages:
Hewitt returned to the bomb damaged Den in 1948 to less success.
Millwall had to apply for re-election 1949-50.
Though we did finish runners-up in Division Four 1952-53.
Sacked 1956 - he later won a case for unfair dismissal against the club.
Ironically given his suspension from football in 1940, he was awarded an FA long service medal in 1954!
