Youth-led protests in Nepal last September over corruption and a social media ban were met with police gunfire, leaving 76 people dead. The violence triggered Prime Minister KP Oli’s resignation and the formation of an interim government under Sushila Karki. Early elections have been announced for March, alongside a judicial inquiry into the killings and destruction. Gen Z activists are pushing for accountability, human rights investigations and meaningful youth participation. Analysts warn of political and constitutional hurdles, particularly from long-entrenched parties. Yet many Nepalis remain cautiously optimistic that the youth-driven movement can shape a more democratic path forward. Security officers in Nepal used disproportionate force against the youth-led uprising in September, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.
