Asbestos Found in Wind Turbine Brake Pads
Update: 2025-11-28
Description
Asbestos-Contaminated Brake Pads Found in Australian Wind Turbines: A Growing ConcernA third Australian renewable energy company, Beijing Jingeng Energy International Australia, has discovered white asbestos in wind turbine lift brake pads supplied by Chinese company 3S Industry. This follows similar findings by Goldwind Australia and Vestas, raising alarm bells about the widespread use of these parts across the countrys wind farms.Critics argue that the Australian Border Force and the federal government are not doing enough to prevent asbestos from entering the country, despite it being illegal since 2003. The company that supplied the brake pads, 3S Industry, has not yet responded to requests for comment. The presence of asbestos in brake pads is particularly concerning as the fibers can be released as the pads wear down and inhaled, potentially leading to asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma. Experts stress the need to eradicate asbestos-containing products from the supply chain, as there is currently no cure for these diseases.
