Australia's Intense Heatwave: Record-Breaking Temperatures
Update: 2025-12-05
Description
Australias southern states are experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring more than ten degrees Celsius above average, leading to extreme fire dangers. The northern outback is bracing for prolonged heat, with daily temperatures expected to remain well above forty degrees Celsius into next week. The heatwave began earlier this week along the west coast and has since moved to southeastern states, with Adelaide and Melbourne seeing their warmest days since March. Maximums are predicted to reach the low to mid-forties in a wide area of the outback, stretching from the Pilbara and Kimberley regions to western New South Wales. Extreme fire dangers are forecast for the Riverina and Mallee regions. A southerly change is expected to bring significant relief to Sydney and the southern coast, but northern Australia may not see relief until cloud cover and rain arrive. This pattern of intense heat is expected to repeat throughout what the Bureau of Meteorology predicts will be one of Australias hottest summers on record.
