Australia's New Land Clearing Laws: Stricter Regulations
Update: 2025-11-29
Description
Australias Environment Minister, Murray Watt, has announced immediate, stricter land clearing regulations, effective without a transition period for farmers. These changes, part of broader reforms to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, aim to protect the environment and streamline renewable energy project approvals. High-risk farm land clearing will now fall under federal environmental act, scrapping the continued use provision. The new laws establish a federal environmental protection agency with significant fines for illegal clearing, and remove an exemption for clearing within fifty meters of rivers and creeks in the Great Barrier Reef catchment. Farmers can still clear land but need federal assessment and approval for environmentally significant actions.
