BC Card's Stablecoin Pilot: Crypto in Daily Spending
Update: 2025-12-23
Description
BC Card, South Koreas leading payments processor, successfully concludes a stablecoin pilot program, paving the way for international users to pay local merchants with digital prepaid cards. Collaborating with blockchain firm Wavebridge, wallet provider Aaron Group, and remittance service Global Money Express, the test involved converting stablecoins from overseas wallets into digital prepaid cards, which functioned seamlessly at Korean shops. BC Card, processing over twenty percent of the nations card transactions and covering three point four million merchants, is preparing for full stablecoin payments as regulations shift. However, the Financial Services Commissions missed deadline on a draft proposal for won-based stablecoins due to disagreements with the Bank of Korea over bank control has caused a setback. Despite this, stablecoins continue to gain traction as payment alternatives, with YouTube paying US creators in PayPal USD and Visa settling transactions with USDC for banks. South Koreas pilot program underscores the growing role of crypto in daily spending worldwide.
