On the final day of Black History Month, and the second day of the WORT Winter Pledge Drive, we talk with Michael Jeffries about the struggles, the joys, and the mundane experienced by Black Queer college students.

In his forthcoming book Black and Queer on Campus, Michael P. Jeffries reveals the complicated everyday realities of college life for Black students who identify LGBTQ+. Michael (a Black, straight, cisgender author and professor) conducted in-depth interviews with students from both HBCUs and PWIs and shares their experiences while challenging stereotypes.

Dr. Michael P. Jeffries is Dean of Academic Affairs, Class of 1949 Professor in Ethics, and Professor of American Studies at Wellesley College. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and works at the intersection of race, culture, and politics.

Jeffries previous books are Behind the Laughs: Community and Inequality in Comedy (Stanford University Press, 2017), Paint the White House Black: Barack Obama and the Meaning of Race in America (Stanford University Press, 2013), and Thug Life: Race, Gender, and the Meaning of Hip-Hop (University of Chicago Press, 2011).
