Today’s episode is one where you and I get to listen to my friend entertain us with some stories, and make us think with a few others. Matthew Wharton is one of my most cherished friends in golf; smart, funny, curious, serious, and kind. We talk golf courses, golf industry, golf shots, and golf’s future, and have a lot of fun doing it.
Since 2005, Matthew has been the Superintendent at the Carolinas Golf Club in Charlotte, NC. He is a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, and in 2016, he was only the 69th individual to earn the certificate as a Master Greenkeeper by the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association.
He posts his thoughts on his blog The Greenkeeper at carolinagreenkeeper.blogspot.com. He is a past President of the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendent Association, and contributes a regular feature to the Golf Course Industry magazine under the heading of America’s Greenkeeper.
There’s no doubt, Matthew has an incredibly impressive resume. But I’m not looking to hire him. To me, he is one of the most passionate people about golf that I know. He’s someone I enjoy trading Twitter and text messages with about something one of us has done or seen or written. We share common loves for the North Carolina sandhills, the taller hills of central Appalachia, and the distant links lands of Scotland. Basically, the conversation you’re about to hear could be us on the phone at any given time; I was just smart enough to record and publish this one.
