Description

What is the worst thing you have done under the influence of alcohol? Is it manslaughter? Martin Lockett shares his story of becoming aware of systemic racism from a young age, a yearning to fit in, being in a gang and eventually doing something that would put him behind bars for almost 20 years. He took his time in prison as an opportunity to work on himself, heal and help others.

Martin's Early Life and Struggles
Martin shares his upbringing in Portland, Oregon, during the 80s, a time marked by gang violence, drug epidemics, and racial tensions. He reflects on the impact of his environment on his self-esteem and identity formation, leading to a struggle with alcohol from a young age.
The Tragic Turn
Martin recounts the fateful New Year's Eve in 2003 when he, under the influence of alcohol, caused a fatal car crash that took the lives of two individuals who had, ironically, dedicated their lives to sobriety and community service.
After realizing the gravity of his actions, Martin vows to honor the legacies of the victims by dedicating his life to helping others struggling with addiction and mental health issues. This commitment becomes his driving force as he navigates the legal consequences and begins his journey towards rehabilitation.
Educational Pursuits and Personal Growth
Despite facing a lengthy prison sentence, Martin seizes the opportunity to further his education while incarcerated. He immerses himself in college courses, delving into African American studies and psychology, which not only enhances his academic knowledge but also fosters a positive sense of identity and self-esteem.
