agree with previous post..was unkind to push her to read letter. also, college has never been equalizer..students always left at semester end to return to unequal home life.

That felt exploitative to me when they pushed the girl to read her letter after she made it pretty clear that she didn't want to, and the reporter was just waiting for the tears to come.
