Two Chinese men, Fanyue Gong and Benlin Yuan, are accused of illegally sending advanced Nvidia chips to China, bypassing U.S. export rules. They allegedly worked with a logistics company in Hong Kong and an AI firm in China, claiming the chips were for customers in the U.S. or other countries. The chips were then shipped to U.S. warehouses, where their labels were replaced with fake ones. Yuan also helped recruit inspectors to ensure the chips were not mentioned as headed for China. This operation, Operation Gatekeeper, threatens national security by funneling advanced AI technology to potential adversaries.
