Library Apps

Check your local library to see if any of these services are available to you! All libraries are different and some will have access to different services, with different collections. All of these apps are available on iOS and Android.

  • Axis360 - An eBook service for public libraries.
  • cloudLibrary - Downloadable eBooks for public libraries.
  • ComicsPlus - A comic book and graphic novel service for libraries.
  • Flipster - Digital magazines and newspapers services for libraries.
  • Freading - Downloadable eBooks for public libraries. Usually offers a more esoteric collection than the other eBook services.
  • Freegal - Download, and keep, MP3 every single week. Streaming music is also available, depending on your library's options.
  • Hoopla - The service with almost everything. Read eBooks and comics, listen to music and audiobooks, watch movies and TV.
  • Kanopy - Indie movies, award winning documentaries, The Great Courses, and more.
  • OverDrive (aka Libby) - OverDrive is the service and Libby is their app. OverDrive is the biggest service in downloadable eBooks and eAudio in the North American public library space.
  • RBDigital - A little bit of everything. eBooks, eAudiobooks, digital magazines.

Software

  • Ampps - Easily set up a MariaDB, Apache, and PHP development environment on your Mac, Windows, or Linux. Then install various programmes using Softaculous.
  • Calibre - Your eBooks, organised, converted, and managed your way. 100% cross platform.
  • Chunky - My preferred comic book reader for iPadOS.
  • Dark Noise - Soothing sounds for your ears. Available on iOS and iPadOS.
  • GoodNotes - Handwritten notebooks done right in the digital world. The first big reason to own an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil.
  • GoodReader - Excellent PDF reader for iOS and iPadOS.
  • iA Writer - An excellent and affordable Markdown editor.
  • Joplin - Ditch Evernote and discover something better, and simpler, than Notion. Joplin is a cross platform and available iOS, iPadOS, and Android.
  • MindNode - Mind mapping software for iPad, iOS, and macOS. See below for an example of how I organised this show using MindMap.
  • Procreate - Drawing, sketching, and painting on the iPad Pro. This is the second big reason to own an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil.
  • Typora - The best Markdown editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • Visual Studio Code - My preferred code editor. Oddly enough, even though it's made by Microsoft, it's totally cross platform for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • VLC - One of the best video apps in the world. Free, open source, cross platform, and will play damn near anything you throw at it.
