Daily Devo | Scripture as Our Spiritual Family History (Practicing the Way, Romans 15:1-6)
Description
People often wonder why we read the Old Testament when we have the new. In today's passage, the Apostle Paul was speaking into a conflict between Jewish and non-Jewish believers in the early church. Paul chooses a passage from the Psalms, from the Old Testament, and says that these things were written in the past to teach us and encourage us. We are the spiritual descendants of those people, and this family history can help us understand who we are even today.

For Reflection:
"Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us." - Romans 15:4
- Is there a passage of the Bible that has been especially helpful to you for hope, spiritual endurance, or the encouragement to love others? How has God used that passage to shape you?
- Does the Bible help you to feel connected to the people of the past and to a larger spiritual family history? How does that connection to the people of God across space and time affect how you see yourself?
