393. יְהִי מְאֹרֹת – הַכֹּל תָּלוּי בּוֹ לְהַכְלִיל לִילִית בָּעוֹלָם. כָּתוּב (איוב ג) קָטֹן וְגָדוֹל שָׁם הוּא. וְכָתוּב (ישעיה לג) כִּי אִם שָׁם אַדִּיר ה’ לָנוּ. וְעַל זֶה כָּתוּב (שם לד) אַךְ שָׁם הִרְגִּיעָה לִילִית וּמָצְאָה לָהּ מָנוֹחַ.

394. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר, יְהִי מְאֹרֹת – אַסְפַּקְלַרְיָה שֶׁלֹּא מְאִירָה מֵעַצְמָהּ, אֶלָּא עַל יְדֵי אוֹרוֹת עֶלְיוֹנִים שֶׁמְּאִירִים לָהּ כְּמוֹ עֲשָׁשִׁית שֶׁמְּקַבֶּלֶת אוֹר שֶׁמֵּאִיר. כָּתוּב (יהושע ג) הִנֵּה אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית אֲדוֹן כָּל הָאָרֶץ. הִנֵּה אֲרוֹן – זוֹ אַסְפַּקְלַרְיָה שֶׁאֵינָהּ מְאִירָה. הַבְּרִית – אַסְפַּקְלַרְיָה הַמְּאִירָה. הִנֵּה אֲרוֹן – זוֹהִי מְאֹרֹת. אֲרוֹן – תֵּבָה לְהַכְנִיס בְּתוֹכָהּ תּוֹרָה שֶׁבִּכְתָב. הַבְּרִית – זוֹ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ שֶׁמְּאִירָה לָהּ, וְהִיא בְּרִית יַחַד עִם אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית דַּוְקָא. אֲדוֹן כָּל הָאָרֶץ – הַבְּרִית שֶׁהוּא אֲדוֹן כָּל הָאָרֶץ.

395. וּמִשּׁוּם שֶׁהָאָרוֹן הַזֶּה הוּא אָדוֹן, בִּגְלַל הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ שֶׁמְּאִירָה לָהּ וּמְאִירָה לְכָל הָעוֹלָם כָּךְ נִקְרֵאת, וּמִמֶּנּוּ לָקְחָה אֶת הַשֵּׁם. וְנִקְרָא הָאָרוֹן הַזֶּה אָדוֹן בַּסּוֹד שֶׁל אָלֶ”ף דָּלֶ”ת נוּ”ן יוֹ”ד. כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ צַדִּיק וְצֶדֶק, כָּךְ אָדוֹ”ן אֲדֹנָ”י זֶה בָּזֶה תְּלוּיִים.

“Let there be me’orot lacking Vav,” this is because everything depends on her, and thus the verse יְהִי מְאֹרֹת—”Let there be luminaries” (Genesis 1:14 ) includes also the creation of Lil-th in the world. Therefore, it is written lacking Vav, which is an expression of a curse (קללה, k’lala). It is written: קָטֹן וְגָדוֹל שָׁם הוּא—”Small and great are there” (Job 3:19 ), for the Malchut includes both the Mochin of katnut (smallness) and the Mochin of gadlut (greatness). And it is written: כִּי אִם שֵׁם אַדִּיר יְהוָה לָנוּ—”For only the mighty name of YHVH is ours” (Isaiah 33:21 ), that is, the Mochin of gadlut included in her. And regarding this, it is written: אַךְ שָׁם הִרְגִּיעָה לִילִית וּמָצְאָה לָהּ מָנוֹחַ—”But there Lil-th rested and found herself a resting place” (Isaiah 34:14 ). This is also in the Malchut. Thus, everything is included in her, both katnut and gadlut, and even the klipah of Lil-th. And the conclusion is: וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה—”And His kingdom rules over all” (Psalms 103:19 ). Therefore, it is written me’orot (מארת) without Vav.

This Zohar passage interprets יְהִי מְאֹרֹת—”Let there be luminaries” (Genesis 1:14 ), written without Vav (מארת), as well as קָטֹן וְגָדוֹל שָׁם הוּא—”Small and great are there” (Job 3:19 ), אַךְ שָׁם הִרְגִּיעָה לִילִית וּמָצְאָה לָהּ מָנוֹחַ—”But there Lilith rested and found herself a resting place” (Isaiah 34:14 ), and וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה—”And His kingdom rules over all” (Psalms 103:19 ). The Malchut (Nukva), called me’orot without Vav (וֹ), encompasses all—Mochin of katnut, gadlut, and even the klipah of Li-th—reflecting her role as the lowest level where everything depends. The lack of Vav signifies a curse tied to Lil-th’s presence in Malchut during katnut.

Main Point: Malchut, as me’orot without Vav (מארת), includes katnut, gadlut, and the klipah of Lil-th, with the curse (via klipot) arising from her diminished state, yet her dominion encompasses all, as per וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה.

Rabbi Elazar said: יְהִי מְאֹרֹת—”Let there be luminaries” (Genesis 1:14 ), lacking Vav (me’orot, מארת), its meaning is the Malchut in the aspect of being called the aspaklaria (mirror) that does not shine of itself, but through the lights above her that shine to her, like the glass walls of a lantern that collect light from the candle standing within them and shine outward. So too, the Nukva collects light from the levels above her and shines to the lower ones, but in herself, she has no light, like the glass walls of the lantern.

It is written: הִנֵּה אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית—”Behold, the ark of the covenant” (Joshua 3:11 ), etc. “Behold, the ark,” this is the aspaklaria that does not shine, that is, the Malchut, the Nukva of Zeir Anpin. The Brit (covenant) is the aspaklaria that shines. “Behold, the ark,” this is me’orot lacking Vav (מארת), that is, the Nukva before Zeir Anpin, called the Written Torah, is connected with her. The ark is a container to hold within it the Written Torah, which is Zeir Anpin. The Brit is the sun, that is, Zeir Anpin, which shines to the Nukva, and she is also called Brit like him when she is connected with him. Therefore, she is called in the verse “the ark of the covenant.”

What the verse says: אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית אֲדוֹן כָּל הָאָרֶץ—”The ark of the covenant, the master of all the earth” (Joshua 3:11 ), is precise, for the ark of the covenant is so only when she is in connection with Zeir Anpin, called Brit. Then she is called the Lord of all the earth, like her husband Zeir Anpin. The Brit, which is Zeir Anpin, is called the master of all the earth.

And this ark is Adon (Master/Lord), because the sun that shines to her and to the whole world is called so, and from him the Nukva takes the name Adon. And this ark is called by the name Adon in the secret of the name Adonai (אדנ” י). Just as we say Tzaddik for the male and Tzedek for the Nukva, so too Adon is the name of the male, and Adonai is the name of the Nukva. For just as the name Tzedek of the Nukva is derived from the name of the male, Tzaddik, so too the name Adonai of the Nukva is derived from the name of the male, Adon. Therefore, when the Nukva is called entirely by the name of her husband, that is, the name “ark of the covenant,” as mentioned above, then she is called by the name of the male, Adon.
