Daily Zohar 4980

Zohar Noach
Continued from previous DZ
#175
Rabbi Yossi said: “In this generation,” this is to his praise, that in that guilty generation, he (Noach) was found to be a righteous and perfect man. Certainly, it is not specifically in his generation, but even in the generation of Moses, he would have been considered righteous. But he could not defend the world, because ten righteous ones were not found in the world, as it is said regarding the overturning of Sodom: “אוּלַי יִמָּצְאוּן שָׁם עֲשָׂרָה”, “Perhaps ten will be found there” (Genesis 18:32 ). And they were not found there, therefore they were destroyed. Similarly, here, ten were not found; only Noah and his three sons and their wives were found, who were not ten, and therefore they could not defend the generation.
Notes:
This Zohar passage interprets “אוּלַי יִמָּצְאוּן שָׁם עֲשָׂרָה” (Genesis 18:32 ), continuing #174’s theme of Noach’s righteousness (צַדִּיק). Rabbi Yossi praises Noach as righteous, even compared to Moses’ generation, but his merit was insufficient to save the generation of the Flood due to the lack of ten righteous ones, as was the case with Sodom. This underscores the collective power of Tzaddikim in sustaining the world.
#176
Rabbi Elazar asked his father, Rabbi Shimon: ‘Behold, we have learned that when the world is filled with the sins of human beings, and judgment goes forth, woe to the righteous one found in the world, for he is punished first for the sins of the wicked.’ Regarding this, he questioned: How was Noach saved from the Flood and not punished for the sins of the generation? And Rabbi Shimon answered him: Behold, it was said that the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to bring forth offspring from him into the world, and therefore he was saved. And further, because the judgment could not prevail over him, for he was covered and hidden in the ark and concealed from sight.
Notes:
This Zohar passage continues the discussion of Noach’s righteousness, addressing why Noach escaped the Flood’s judgment despite the principle that the righteous are punished first for a generation’s sins. Rabbi Shimon explains that Noach’s salvation was due to the divine will for his offspring and his concealment in the ark, shielding him from judgment. This reflects the protective role of Yessod (Zeir Anpin) to sustain the righteous, connecting to Noach’s divine preservation.
