In this Diving Deeper episode, Adam welcomes Old Testament scholar and 1517 Scholar in Residence Chad Bird to help listeners see the Old Testament as a Christ-centered, grace-filled story rather than a distant or outdated text. Together they unpack the rise of Hebrew Roots/Torah-keeping movements, clarify which Old Testament laws were fulfilled in Christ, and explain how Paul’s warning to the Galatians still speaks into modern confusion around law, gospel, and Christian freedom.

Chad then shows how Jesus and the apostles read the Scriptures—finding Christ in Genesis, the sacrifices, the feasts, and the Psalms—and how believers today can read and pray the Old Testament through that same lens.

Chad Bird is a Scholar in Residence at 1517, where he teaches and writes to help Christians see the gospel shining through the Old Testament. He has served as a pastor, professor, and lecturer in Old Testament and Hebrew, and holds master’s degrees from Concordia Theological Seminary and Hebrew Union College. A prolific author, Chad has written books including Unveiling Mercy, The Christ Key, Night Driving: Notes from a Prodigal Soul, Your God Is Too Glorious, and Untamed Prayers. He co-hosts the podcasts 40 Minutes in the Old Testament and Hidden Streams and regularly creates biblical teaching content online. Chad and his wife, Stacy, make their home in Texas and love spending time with their children and grandchildren.
