Evidence of Flight

Evidence of flight refers to a person's attempt to flee a crime scene or avoid arrest, which can be interpreted as an indication of guilt. It is often considered circumstantial evidence and can be used by prosecutors to strengthen their case.

Arraignment

An arraignment is a formal court proceeding where a criminal defendant is informed of the charges against them and asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. It is a crucial step in the criminal justice process, ensuring the defendant's rights are protected.

Skull Fracture

A skull fracture is a break in the bones of the skull. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including blunt force trauma, falls, and accidents. The severity of a skull fracture can vary depending on the location and extent of the break.

Brain Bleed

A brain bleed, also known as a cerebral hemorrhage, occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including head injuries, high blood pressure, and aneurysms. Brain bleeds can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.

Q&A

  • What evidence suggests that Nicole Verzi may have been trying to flee the scene after the baby's death?

Verzi was seen leaving her Airbnb in the early morning hours after the baby's death, appearing to be making a hasty exit. She was fully dressed and had her makeup and hair done, suggesting she had prepared to leave.

  • Why is Verzi's absence at her arraignment significant?

Verzi's decision not to appear in court, despite the seriousness of the charges against her, raises questions about her intentions and potential guilt. It also suggests a lack of cooperation with the legal process.

  • How do medical experts explain the severity of the baby's injuries in relation to the alleged fall?

Medical experts believe that the baby's skull fracture and brain bleeds are inconsistent with a fall from an 18-inch bouncy seat. They suggest that the injuries are more likely the result of a forceful impact or a deliberate act of violence.

  • What are the prosecution's reasons for seeking the death penalty in this case?

The prosecution is seeking the death penalty based on the severity of the baby's injuries, which they believe were inflicted through torture. They also argue that the baby was under 12 years of age, making the crime particularly heinous.

  • How does Verzi's psychology PhD background complicate the case?

Verzi's academic background in psychology raises questions about her understanding of child development, trauma, and the potential for mental health issues to influence her actions. It also raises concerns about the potential for her to have exploited her knowledge for malicious purposes.

Show Notes

PhD student Nicole Virzi remains in custody on charges of homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of children.

While visiting friends in Pittsburgh, Virzi cared for 6-week-old twins to give the mother a break. Both boys ended up in the hospital, and one died. EMTs transported Leon Katz and his father to the hospital shortly before midnight, but Nicole Virzi did not stay long.

She was seen returning to her Airbnb just before 1 a.m., struggling to unlock the door. By 5 a.m., Virzi appeared to be preparing to leave town. Security footage captured her making what seemed to be a hasty exit less than five hours later.

Although she was booked for two more nights at the apartment, Virzi appeared to be leaving. She was seen on security video leaving the building at 5:45 a.m. She reached for her phone and made a call while standing on the sidewalk.

At 5:47 a.m., Leon Katz was pronounced dead. Three minutes later, at 5:50 a.m., police arrived at the Airbnb, and two officers approached Virzi on the sidewalk, quickly placing her in a patrol car. She was then transported to police headquarters, where she agreed to questioning without an attorney present.
