Q&A

  • What are some historical examples of extreme weather events mentioned in the podcast?

The podcast mentions a period in California's history with 30 days of rain filling the Central Valley, followed by 30 months without significant rainfall, leading to one of the biggest droughts known.

  • What challenges did the Rancho Gordo bean guy face when starting his business?

Initially, people viewed dry beans as "poor people's food." Later, health food store customers found his boutique-style beans too expensive, indicating a struggle to find the right market perception.

  • What is the significance of identifying vintage cast iron cookware by its logo and manufacturing details?

Logos and manufacturing details help determine the age, origin, and authenticity of cast iron pieces. This is crucial for collectors and enthusiasts to understand the item's history and potential value.

  • What is the main concern regarding the brittle two-pronged power cords on vintage Fender amps?

These cords are made of ultra-brittle plastic that often cracks and breaks, posing a safety hazard and requiring replacement to ensure the amp can be used safely.

  • What are the potential issues with modifying vintage Hi-Fi amps for guitar use?

While possible, modifying Hi-Fi amps for guitar use can be complex. Their circuitry is designed for different purposes, and many controls may not function effectively with a guitar signal, requiring careful consideration and modification.

  • What is the advice for dealing with a rusted chrome faceplate on a vintage amp?

While rust can be removed, it often leaves pitting. Options include painting over it (which may look bad), covering it with thin, stiff plastic, or exploring protective coatings used in the car restoration community, though results may be visible.

  • What is the primary concern when replacing a transformer in a Rickenbacker amp?

The main concern is ensuring the replacement transformer has the correct specifications, including output high voltage, heater voltage, and ideally, similar mounting and physical dimensions to the original.

  • What is the recommendation for replacing the brittle two-pronged power cord on a 1965 Fender Champ?

The broken end can be cut off, and a new, old-fashioned two-pronged plug can be attached. Alternatively, a complete cord with a plug can be installed, with options for secure connections or even a temporary "hillbilly" fix with wire nuts and tape.

  • What makes attending a guitar show a unique experience?

Guitar shows offer an unparalleled concentration of guitars and amplifiers, exceeding what can be found even in the largest music stores. It's a unique environment for enthusiasts to explore and discover.

  • What advice is given for attending a guitar show with others?

It's recommended not to bring individuals who have no interest in guitars or amplifiers, such as young children or uninterested companions, as they may find the experience tedious.

INGREDIENTS:
1 can cargamanto beans rinsed and drained
avocado oil in the pan
1⁄4 green pepper chopped
1⁄2 yellow onion diced
2 garlic cloves minced
1 can El Pato hot tomato sauce
1⁄2 tsp. cumin
1⁄2 tsp. paprika
salt & pepper to taste
Heat oil in the pan
Add pepper, onion, garlic
Saute for about 5 minutes until softened
Stir in the beans, El Pato, cumin, paprika
Season with salt and pepper
Add 1 cup water or broth
Bring to a boil then reduce to simmer
Reduce for about 10-15 minutes stirring occasionally to preferred
consistency
Serve over rice with some avocado or sour cream
This is great as is, but carnivores may want to add some meat.
Living in the Polish neighborhood that I do, I first sliced up and browned
some fresh made Kielbasa from the local smokery and put it aside before
softening the veggies in the fond, then adding it back again during the
simmering process. Multicultural chef's kiss. - Danny
