Description

In this episode, you'll hear about:

🌟 How Eisa didn’t continue on her “practical” path as a visual artist but instead turned her fascination and exploration of movement into a political statement.

🌟 The body as a site for investigation and learning more about the self and society through memories embedded in our muscles.

🌟 How people can create language with our bodies and movement.

🌟 The power and agency of owning your body.

🌟 How Eisa faces the challenge of learning a new skill set with each new project she takes on—becoming a beginner each time.

About this guest:

Eisa Jocson is a contemporary choreographer and dancer from the Philippines, trained as a visual artist, with a background in ballet. She made her first movement work in 2010. At that point in time, she was teaching pole dancing as a fitness regime. She exposes body politics in the service and entertainment industry as seen through the unique socioeconomic lens of the Philippines. She studies how the body moves and what conditions make it move – be it social mobility or movement out of Philippines through migrant work. In all her creations – from pole to macho dancing and hostess to Disney princess to Superwoman to Zoo animals – capital is the driving force of movement pushing the indentured body into spatial geographies.
