This episode features Dr. Joanne Patterson, a clinical academic speech & language therapist who has over 25 years of clinical experience. She is a NIHR Clinical Lecturer and Macmillan Principal Speech & Language Therapist (SLT), funded jointly by City Hospitals Sunderland and a NIHR personal award. She completed her PhD (NIHR RDC award) in 2010, during which she reported on swallowing outcomes following head and neck cancer treatment. Her clinical and research interests include head and neck cancer dysphagia, functional outcome measures, cancer survivorship, medically unexplained dysphagia, cricopharyngeal dysfunction and swallowing intervention development. In this interview, we discuss her research article, titled, “Feasibility and acceptability of combining cognitive behavioural therapy techniques with swallowing therapy in head and neck cancer dysphagia,” which was published in BMC Cancer in January of 2018.
