You take the guns, they will use knives, take the knives they will use hammers. Treat the problem not the symptom. Mental health needs to get more funding and be free for those severe cases that need it
Don't worry, there's still a shit tonne of guns in Australia. It's a bit harder to get semi autos, unless you're a criminal. There's been gang shootings for a while in Sydney. The USA is portrayed as the boogeyman and our gun laws are apparently world leading. It's BS. Our laws are poorly administered, highly political and the main reason we don't shoot each other is probably the same reason our homicide rate is low.
So let me get this straight. You guys want to confiscate 70 million rifles from the hands of 25 million Americans (roughly 1 in 20) and take away that right from the rest of the 340 million Americans because of, by your own stated numbers, 298 deaths? Don't get it twisted, every single one a tragedy, but TWO HUNDRED NINETY EIGHT??? More Americans have died from lightning strikes in that same time period. Sorry, but you don't solve a problem by punishing the innocent.
