Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Phos Hilaron

O gladsome light of the holy glory

of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by joyful voices,

O Son of God, Giver of Life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 65

1  Praise awaits you, O God, in Zion, *

and to you shall vows be performed.

2  O you who hear our prayer, *

to you all flesh shall come.

3  When iniquities prevail against me, *

you forgive our transgressions.

4  Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, *

to dwell in your courts.

4  We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, *

your holy temple.

5  By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, *

O God of our salvation,

5  the hope of all the ends of the earth *

and of the farthest seas;

6  who formed the mountains by his power, *

and is girded about with might;

7  who stills the raging of the seas, *

the roaring of their waves,

the tumult of the peoples.

8  Those who dwell at the ends of the earth

shall be in fear at your signs; *

you cause the morning and the evening to rejoice.

9  You visit the earth and water it; *

you greatly enrich it;

9  the river of God is full of water;

you prepare the grain, *

for so you provide for the earth.

10  You water its furrows abundantly, *

you settle its ridges,

10  softening it with showers, *

and blessing its growth.

11  You crown the year with your bounty; *

your paths overflow with abundance.

12  The pastures of the wilderness overflow, *

and the hills are girded with gladness,

13  the meadows are clothed with flocks,

the valleys are covered with grain, *

they shout and sing together for joy. †

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

2 Kings 10

10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the rulers of the city, to the elders, and to the guardians of the sons of Ahab, saying, “Now then, as soon as this letter comes to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, fortified cities also, and weapons, select the best and fittest of your master’s sons and set him on his father’s throne and fight for your master’s house.” But they were exceedingly afraid and said, “Behold, the two kings could not stand before him. How then can we stand?” So he who was over the palace, and he who was over the city, together with the elders and the guardians, sent to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, and we will do all that you tell us. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever is good in your eyes.” Then he wrote to them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side, and if you are ready to obey me, take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow at this time.” Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were bringing them up. <b class="verse-num" id="v1
