Description
🎸 Exclusively Van Halen — Eddie Van Halen’s First Guitar + Back to the Future 40th Anniversary! ⚡
On this electrifying episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we’re taking it way back — to the humble beginnings of a guitar legend. 🤘
Before the striped guitars, the tapping solos, and the stadium anthems, there was one instrument that started it all for Eddie Van Halen: a Teisco Del Rey. Cheap? Sure. But it was the spark that ignited one of the greatest revolutions in rock history. 🔥
I also share my experience seeing Back to the Future on the big screen for its 40th Anniversary Edition! What an incredible trip through time. That movie — and Marty McFly’s epic guitar moment — is the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place. And let’s be honest… the Van Halen connection in that movie still gives me chills every single time. ⚡
🎸 The Guitar That Started It All
Every guitarist remembers their first instrument — the one that lit the fire. For Eddie, that moment came when he was just 12 years old, ordering a Teisco Del Rey right out of a Sears & Roebuck catalog.
It wasn’t a pro-level axe, but it was enough to start a revolution. With that guitar, Eddie joined his first band — The Broken Combs, an elementary school group that gave him his first taste of performing and crafting the tone that would change rock forever.
Built in Japan from 1948 to 1967, Teisco guitars were funky, affordable, and full of character. Eddie’s is believed to be the WG-4L, with four pickups, individual switches, and a vibrato system — a lot of guitar for just over $100!
These “budget” guitars were the first step for thousands of players, and Eddie’s story proves that greatness doesn’t come from price tags — it comes from passion, persistence, and pure love for the music.
Teisco even made a comeback in 2018, keeping that same DIY, garage-band spirit alive for new generations of players.
Just five years after getting that Teisco, Eddie and Alex formed Van Halen — and rock ’n’ roll was never the same.
🎶 No matter where you start, what matters most is picking up that first guitar — and never putting it down.
