Description

Over the river, and through the wood,

To Grandfather’s house we go;

the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh

through the white and drifted snow.

Many of us are familiar with the poem “Over the River and Through the Woods” (also called “The New-England Boy’s Song about Thanksgiving Day”),  but you probably don’t know who wrote it. Lydia Maria Child was an American abolitionist, activist, and writer.  Her writings were widely read from the 1820s through the 1850s.

Lydia Moland joins us to tell us about the life and legacy of Child. Moland is the author of the new book Lydia Maria Child: A Radical American Life.

Lydia Moland is professor of philosophy at Colby College. Her scholarship in German philosophy, including Hegel’s Aesthetics: The Art of Idealism, has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the ACLS, and the American Academy in Berlin. Her work on Lydia Maria Child has appeared in the Paris Review, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and on National Public Radio.

Then we talk about Brazil and Former President Jair Bolsonaro’s stay in Florida with James Green. Green joins us from Rio.

James N. Green is Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Professor of Modern Latin American History at Brown University. He has traveled extensively throughout Latin America and lived more than a decade in Brazil. He was previously the Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Brown University and the Director of the Brazil Initiative. He has authored or co-edited of eleven books on Brazil and Latin America.
