Description

The nature of God is peace, not disorder, so what is the church for, and how is it to be ordered?
The church is one body under Christ, and spiritual gifts are given to us for the edification of the church. Yet, there are rules and structures for using tongues and prophecy in the church. Tongues require interpretation, and only one speaker and interpreter at a time; Prophecy again can only be given subsequently by two or three at a time, to be evaluated by the others in the congregation.
It is in this context that Corinthian women were told to keep silent (in the weighing up of a prophetic word as this task was to be fulfilled by the male elders of the church). Despite this verse sounding culturally jarring to us today, we see throughout the New Testament how Jesus valued women and revolutionised the Greco-Roman view of the day.
