Government Shutdown Impacts on CA
Social security checks, student loan bills and mail will continue to be delivered but thousands of federal workers are furloughed as the United States government shuts down after Republicans and Democrats in the Senate failed to reach a compromise. CalMatters Health Reporter Kristen Hwang joins Insight with more on how the shutdown could play out here in California.
CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state.
Local Breast Cancer Resources
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is personal to Insight Host Vicki Gonzalez, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. After going through treatments, Vicki learned the compassionate silver lining has been the people she met along the way. Vicki is going to share some of the local support systems she’s come across over the past year. Jen Miramontes is the founder of Cancer Champions, which offers health and wellness classes at no cost to cancer survivors. Melissa Manzo is the program director for Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation, which serves Sacramento’s six-county region. And Vann Luong is a physician assistant who owns Organic Skin Studio and is offering free facials to any cancer survivor for the month of October.
Walk for Apraxia
The Greater Sacramento Walk for Apraxia returns to McKinley Park on Saturday, October 4th. The free event celebrates children living with apraxia of speech, a rare neurological disorder that makes it difficult for kids to speak; while raising funds for therapy, research, and family support. Event organizer Madeline Timberger joins Insight to share her perspective as both an aspiring speech-language pathologist and organizer.
