Hoosier #1 team this week? IU – That’s who!
Description
Another week, and another team tops the SwampSwamiSports.com College Football Top 25 rankings.
The latest “one and done” #1 team was the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

I didn’t observe any celebratory tortilla tossing in Tempe on Saturday by visiting fans from Lubbock, Texas.
One week after getting blown out 42-10 on the road at Utah, Arizona State returned home to face an unbeaten 6-0 Texas Tech squad.
The 4-2 Sun Devils were the surprise winner of the Big 12 last season but had already dropped two games in 2025.

Their chances to repeat as Big 12 champions meant finding a way to score more than the 14 points per game allowed by a very stingy Texas Tech defense.
Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt led his team down the field to score a game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to play as ASU took down Texas Tech 26-22.
Math refresher: 11 minus 5 = 6

Eleven unbeaten teams of just one week ago were reduced to six after Saturday’s college football action.
Down went Texas Tech.
Ole Miss bit the dust at Georgia.
Boise State obliterated formerly unbeaten UNLV.
Memphis was stopped at the UAB one yard line and fell from the unbeatens.
The perfect season for the Miami Hurricanes was blown away by Louisville.
Only six major college football teams remain perfect after the week of October 18.
One of those six teams must take the baton and become the next top team in the SwampSwamiSports.com Top 25 for this week.
Hoosier Daddy?
Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti snagged a new contract extension for eight years and a whopping $93 million ($11,625,000 per season). His Hoosiers are now 7-0 and have grabbed the top spot in this week’s rankings.

IU’s 30-20 road victory two weeks ago over now 6-1 Oregon have lifted the Hoosiers above those other five unbeaten teams and into the top spot for this week.
The big money isn’t going to change one thing about Coach Cignetti’s household. He plans to continue reviewing game film and plotting new plays from the comfort of his 35-year old green vinyl recliner in the family’s den.
The 64-year old coach probably didn’t earn a lot of money during the first 27 years of his career as an assistant football coach.

He said last week, “We bought the recliner when we got married. The company has offered to replace it, but they don’t make that kind anymore. It’s untouchable!”
Curt Cignetti finally received his first head coaching assignment at age 50 at a school also known as Indiana University.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania is located in (of course) Indiana, Pennsylvania which is 46 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Coach Cignetti received the top job in 2011 and immediately transformed the team into a winner. IUP made it to the NCAA Division II playoffs three times during his six seasons leading the Crimson Hawks.
From there, Curt Cignetti moved up into the FCS and took Elon University (east of Greensboro, NC) to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018. He was tapped to help transition fast-growing James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA) into the NCAA’s top division (FBS) in the Sunbelt Conference.
Unsurprisingly, Coach Cignetti’s teams at JMU also posted winning records in every season from 2019 through 2023.
Indiana University (that other one in Bloomington, Indiana) offered coach Curt Cignetti a chance to turn around the school’s moribund football program.

Prior to Cignetti’s arrival in 2024, the Hoosiers’ football team had fielded winning teams in just three of the past 29 seasons. Indiana’s new head coach shocked the football world last year as the Hoosiers finished 11-2 and qualified for the 12-team College Football Playoffs.
Indiana is now 7-0 in 2025. Coach Cignetti’s family is financially secure for generations to come.
You can be sure that his ancient green vinyl recliner will remain in the family’s den for good luck for many years to come!
Grim Reaper Report – the firing squad just claimed another victim

Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier was sent packing on Sunday even after his team squeaked past Mississippi State 23-21 at home Saturday in The Swamp. His 3-4 Gators were a respectable 2-2 in the SEC standings through last weekend.
However, Napier’s overall record of 22-23 was indicative of a team which has failed to show improvements midway through his fourth season at the helm.

Billy Napier will receive half the remaining $21.5 million on his University of Florida contract within the next 30 days. Investing that $10.25 million early Christmas bonus at even 4% interest could provide Coach Napier’s family with a perpetual $420,000 annual annuity.
He becomes the ninth head coach of an FBS program who has been fired since the 2025 college football season began:
UCLA – DeShaun Foster
Virginia Tech – Brent Fry
Oklahoma State – Mike Gundy
Oregon State – Trent Bray
Arkansas – Sam Pittman
Penn State – James Franklin
UAB – Trent Dilfer
Colorado State – Jay Norvell
Florida – Billy Napier
Let’s now turn to happier thoughts and reveal this week’s SwampSwamiSports.com College Football Top 25 rankings for the week ending October 18, 2025!
