An autonomous inner voice or intuition that possesses deep knowledge of an individual's true self and purpose. It guides decisions and provides a sense of meaning when aligned with. Ignoring it can lead to distress.

Psyche

The Greek word for "soul," encompassing the totality of the human being, including consciousness, emotions, and the unconscious. In analytic psychology, it represents the energy of life and the autonomous inner self.

An individual's conscious awareness of themselves and their immediate environment. It's the part of the self we typically identify with, responsible for daily functioning and interaction with the external world.

A life experienced in accordance with one's inner truth and soul's agenda. It's not found externally but arises from aligning actions and experiences with one's deepest self, leading to fulfillment and purpose.

Personal Authority

The sense of self-governance and inner knowing that comes from reconnecting with one's innate guidance system. Recovering personal authority is key to living authentically and making choices aligned with one's soul.

Q&A

  • How is meaning defined according to Dr. James Hollis?

Meaning is not something found externally but arises as an experience when our inner world and outer experiences align with the agenda of our soul. It's an experiential state, not a conceptual one.

  • What is the difference between ego consciousness and the psyche?

Ego consciousness is our everyday awareness of ourselves and our surroundings. The psyche, or soul, is the totality of the human being, an energy system that expresses itself through various facets of our being.

  • What are the consequences of ignoring our inner guide or soul's agenda?

Ignoring our inner guide can lead to stress, burnout, low mood, a nagging sense of emptiness, and a feeling that something is missing, even if external life appears successful.

  • How does societal and cultural conditioning impact our sense of meaning?

Societal and cultural conditioning often imposes external definitions of success and purpose, which can disconnect individuals from their authentic inner calling, leading to a crisis of meaning.

  • What is the role of suffering in a meaningful life?

Suffering is an inherent part of the human condition. Neurosis, however, arises from avoiding authentic suffering. Understanding the meaning of our suffering can lead to a deeper sense of purpose.

  • Can individuals find meaning without drastically changing their careers or lifestyles?

Yes, it's often possible to integrate elements that feed the spirit into one's current life. This might involve pursuing hobbies, creative outlets, or re-engaging with passions that were previously neglected.

  • What is the most important message parents can give their children?

Parents should convey that their child is terrific and loved unconditionally, not for pleasing them. Children need to know they are free to live their own journey, even if it differs from parental expectations.

  • What are some helpful tools for self-discovery and understanding one's life path?

Tools like dream work, journaling, and engaging in activities that spark curiosity and spontaneously energize you can help evoke a more respectful conversation with your inner self.

  • How does the environment influence our sense of meaning?

While the core essence of our inner self remains, our environment and upbringing significantly shape how we perceive and express meaning in our lives.

  • What is the primary task for humanity in the 21st century, according to the podcast?

The primary task is to evolve humanity to better listen to and express the soul's calling, enabling more individuals to live lives of genuine meaning and fulfillment.

Show Notes

Do you believe there’s something inside you that knows who you really are? It knows what kind of life you're meant to live, the type of work that lights you up, and what your soul is asking of you? In this episode, you'll learn how to start listening to it.

Dr James Hollis, an 85-year-old Jungian analyst and author of 22 books, has spent more than four decades helping people uncover what's really driving their search for something more. What he has to say is profound, practical – and potentially life-changing.

I begin by asking a deceptively simple question: what is a life of meaning? James explains that it’s not something you go out and find. Rather, it arises when you start living in alignment with your soul’s agenda. He shares his own powerful story of achieving everything he thought he wanted by 35, only to be hit by a depression that forced him to look inward for the first time. That crisis became a turning point and informed the wisdom he shares so generously today.

We discuss why so many people who’ve reached the top in prestigious careers end up in therapy rooms like James’s, questioning what they’ve done with their lives. And we talk about how the ideas and cultural conditioning we absorb as children can misdirect us as adults.

We also speak honestly about depression and why I believe that medics are too quick to reach for diagnoses and prescriptions, when the real issue is a life lacking in meaning. And James and I connect over our fathers, both of whom made sacrifices for their families. We ask what their stories teach us about purpose and alignment – and James shares his advice on how we can help our children to truly thrive.

James has a knack of simplifying complex psychological ideas into realistic advice. And he  has some useful ideas for reconnecting with your psyche. He describes his work as a therapist not to provide answers, but to facilitate ways we can find them ourselves – through creative pursuits,
dreaming, or simply asking better questions.

Whether you're in the middle of a career you're not sure about, navigating a restless midlife, or simply feeling drawn toward something you can't yet name, this episode will meet you exactly where you are. I came away feeling reassured and inspired, and I'm confident you will too.
