Welcome to Album Clash! The latest stop on our musical road trip sees us pay a visit to Memphis Tennessee to compare two landmark albums by two of the biggest names in soul music - Aretha Franklin and Al Green.

Kicking things off on this week’s pod is Aretha’s second appearance on Album Clash, as we go her breakthrough 1967 album (her tenth!), ‘I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You’. In doing so we talk about how Jerry Wexler and Atlantic Records were able to capitalise on Aretha’s stagnation at Columbia Records and turn her into a global megastar. We also have a big dive into how the recording of this album, and one drunken altercation in particular, inadvertently made a small town in rural Alabama one of the most famous places in the history of popular music.

In our latest ‘can’t get you out of my head’ Tim recants how a trip to the footy had him bemoaning the popularity of bland indie bands in the mid-2000s. And, lo and behold, Nobby McGhee finally proves to be of some use - before yet again emphasising just what an insufferable egotist he is.
