Wow. this may be the most self-indulgent, narcissistic, solipsistic and secretly insidious product of egomania that I have heard in a long time. Consider the basic premise of this show: an Orthodox Jewish woman discovers late in life after both her parents are dead that her father isn't her father. She attributes all of the ailments of his life on the agony she assumes he felt for possibly using a sperm donor. She is an only child and it shows. Her mind is totally clouded by self importance. He shoved painkillers in his mouth daily, she remarks in passing, must be due to the pain of his only daughter, the most important person in the world, not being biologically his, because that is all that matters to the supremacists mindset of the Orthodox. For starters, we don't find out why she believes her father isn't her father - she says her DNA test told her she was 52% Ashkenazi, and the rest a mix of European. But that is more Ashkenazi than most Jews - does anyone seriously believe that middle Eastern desert dwellers who spent 2000 years in Europe and look totally white just miraculously emerged like that? What the fuck? What holy world of hocus pocus would that be in? So it's perfectly sound to believe that the Ashkenazi markers between her two parents added up to 52%. In other words, right from the premise the show doesn't make sense. Let's continue. Then, she goes on on a lengthy tirade about her identity crisis. Although she is a mother and married with her own children, we are to believe that she is so devastated by this - by the lack of connection to all those ancestors that now hang in the pictures the strangers they always were - but now without a blood link. Consider how fucked up that sounds. Here are people who were persecuted their whole history on account of their ethnic and religious identity, and were a target of racists and supremacists to whom blood purity mattered so much they were willing to commit genocide, and yet she emphasizes how without an actual blood connection (these people are obsessed with blood - altars, sacrifices, blood this, sprinkle some there, totally gross) those people are nobodies and she is a nobody to them. We all know what will happen. She will eventually come to terms with all this and accept the multifaceted aspects of her identity, but not before she spreads some more racism and phenotypic pseudo science when she reflects how she really was too fair to have been a Jew and all those kids teasing her were right. Instead of highlighting the stupidity of biological supremacist thinking, she states how confused and not knowing who she is (barf) she walked on the streets and looked at the faces of men who she thought might be of age and appearance of her "real" father and wondered to herself 'Are you my father?' Seriously? Again with the racist pseudo science - physiognomy - the belief you can tell things about a person based on their facial appearance. Not that we've ever been wrong when we engage in judging books by the cover. Ok, this show and story line are first of all dishonest. I don't buy the premise, and either the DNA stuff is made up to avoid telling the real story about how she discovered her father wasn't her biological father (thereby engaging in major racist conjecture and stupidity giving the impression 1. that Jew is a specific ethnic group - false, they have 86% European DNA in the case of Ashkenazis - and 2. that that can be used to determine whether your parents are actually your parents!!! WTF) or it's totally made up to create a podcast. The emphasis on "blood relations or no identity" is devious and conspicuously supremacist and somewhat a product of self-hate that stems from the Jewish community where they indoctrinate themselves to believe they are superior - oh no, I'm not fully Jewish! What does that mean? God doesn't love me more?" This may be the least self-aware idiotic story by a self-indulgent suburban mother with too much time on her hands adding no value or depth to the podcast universe and focusing on the worst possible ideas within the context of family secrets.
