Description

As Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on and tensions rise along NATO’s eastern flank, Lithuania is sounding the alarm, not just for itself, but for the entire transatlantic alliance

If countries like Lithuania or Latvia are tested and Canada—or other members of the Alliance—hesitate, it could damage the credibility of NATO's collective defence. This would not only undermine the Alliance, but embolden authoritarian powers globally.

To deter growing Russian aggression and help preserve the international rules-based order, NATO allies, especially Canada, must modernize their defence posture, deepen cooperation with frontline states like Lithuania, and confront emerging threats with unity and urgency.

Gabrielius Landsbergis joined the Expert Series on the sidelines of CANSEC last week to discuss the state of Latvian security; expanding Canada’s role on NATO’s Eastern flank and in the Baltics; the importance of cultivating national resilience in the face of Russian hybrid threats; the need for a unified response from the Alliance; what Canada can learn from Lithuania, a small country that punches above its weight in defence; and the potential for Canada to contribute to the Rearm Europe initiative.
