Jellybean Johnson, the legendary drummer of The Time, has passed away at 69. Known for his innovative drumming and long-standing role in the Minneapolis sound, Johnsons family and the Minneapolis Sound Museum remember him as a beloved husband, father, and musical innovator. Born in Chicago, Johnson moved to Minneapolis and began playing drums and guitar as a teenager. He was a drummer for Flyte Tyme before joining Princes new funk-pop group, The Time. After some lineup changes, Johnson continued to work with former bandmates, writing and producing hits for other artists. He also produced Janet Jacksons hit single Black Cat and released his first solo album in 2021. Johnsons legacy as a musician and innovator will undoubtedly live on.
