How the Grinch Stole Christmas almost had a different Grinch: Jim Carrey was initially set to be painted green, but makeup artist Rick Baker insisted on a fantasy design. The result was an iconic, yet challenging, makeup that caused Carrey to have panic attacks and threaten to quit. The production had to bring in a torture expert to help Carrey cope, and the makeup crew also faced difficulties. Carrey has since expressed interest in reprising the role with motion capture technology.
